Metro in Bucharest

This week we made another trip to Bucharest to pick up our residency cards. Unfortunately they weren't ready so we will be going back again in a few weeks - there is no way to call and see if they are ready ahead of time and you have to pick them up in person. We did have a good visit with the Bakers who are the office couple for our mission. They took us on the Bucharest Metro (sub-way) and showed us how to use it. It doesn't cover the entire city but it is so much faster than trying to use surface transportation - buses, taxis. We should be able to get around Bucharest much easier the next time we go.

We stopped by and visited Niculaie and his Mother Steliana. They have a home with a large yard that is full of fruit trees. Mostly peaches and plums and a fruit that we didn't recognize.

We thought of our grandkids as Niculaie had us hold some of his rabbits.

Sister Powell weighed herself in the park. This guy charges 1 Lei (abt 30 cents)  to weigh yourself on his bathroom scales. We had another nice bike ride in the park. It's fun to meet and talk to people. We find that there are a lot of people that speak some English and like to practice with us. It creates a good opportunity to tell them why we are in Romania and invite them to come to church.

Friday night we went to the Circus. It is an international traveling circus called "The Las Vegas Circus". Didn't see much that looked like Las Vegas but it was really fun. Lots of circus acts - magicians, fire eaters, trapeze, etc. and lots of animals: snakes, lizards, iguanas, alligators and a big elephant that did tricks. We were on the front row and have never been so close to an elephant.

After the show, people could pay a little extra and have their pictures taken standing by or sitting on the elephant. Lots of little kids were there and it made us miss our grand children.

The weather is warming up over here and with the warmer temperatures lots of people hang their wash outside to dry.

They are doing some construction on the beach behind our apartment. It has been a rocky beach that you could not walk on but it looks like they are bringing in a lot of fill dirt and sand and smoothing it out. Maybe we will have a sandy beach someday.

Lots of recycling going on over here. These are bags of plastic bottles headed to be recycled.

The highlight of the week was the "cranberry/nut bread" that Sister Powell made. She got the recipe from Sister Baker while we were in Bucharest. It is so good - full of dried cranberries and walnuts.
